You may have noticed that I haven’t posted since April of 2024. From April through January, I was my wife’s healthcare advocate as she went through two difficult back surgeries with complications. Over this time frame she was in three different hospitals and transitional care facilities. So, not an extensive number of touch points but enough to advise people to be aware and always have an advocate with you when dealing with health issues.
In my opinion the healthcare delivery system (HDS) is a mirror of the entire business world. Why do I say this? People are continually complaining about understaffing due to not being able to find ‘good people’, obvious examples of bad front-line management, and inconsistent delivery of services across personnel and institutions and in some cases out right disregard for patients care.
I am sure some of these problem are residual from COVID, however at this point in time that has become a crutch for administration. My sense is that administrative people are primarily focused on the cosmetics (public image) and financial operations of the institution and truth be told they see the government and their providers as the most important.
One caveat to this rant, that Head Nurse who puts his or her name on the board in the patient’s room is almost always the most caring, knowledgeable person in the building about what is going on with the patient and in the building.
I will leave you with this thought. HDS have a tremendous impact on the economy of this country and the overall health of the population. They can’t get themselves fixed with ‘old’ Leaders who don’t have the correct focus or motivation. More in upcoming on how to ‘fix’ some of these problems.
